Florence Bradley Award
This year the Garden Club of New Haven selected the Friends of Edgewood Park as the recipient of the Florence Bradley Award. Established in 2012, the award recognizes an organization or individual whose work best reflects the mission of GCNH: "to create interest in and promote knowledge of gardening, preservation of natural resources, and civic horticultural work." Located in the Westvile section of New Haven, Edgewood Park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. Friends of Edgewood Park, supported by local businesses and residents, is the nonprofit volunteer organization dedicated to its preservation and enhancement. |
The Connecticut Beekeepers Association is the 2020 recipient of an award from the GCNH's Henry and Nancy Bartels Fund in recoginition of its work in "increasing public awareness of the importance of honey bees for Connecticut agricultural crops and the environment and promoting and supporting all beekeepers and their local organizations." In addition to "providing a common forum for the beekeepers of Connecticut," the association conducts a "Bee School" that teaches the essentials of beekeeping.

Partners for Plants Progress
Hard work by Garden Club of New Haven members under the leadership of P4P project leader, George Davis, at New Haven's Edgerton Park has begun to pay off. Shown here is the pollinator meadow that replaced a jungle of the invasive, Mugwort, in the initial plot targeted by the multi-year project. P4P (partners for plants) is an inititiative of the Garden Club of America "to monitor and conserve rare plants, restore native habitats, and remove invasive weeds" on public land. Each project joins garden club volunteers with professional plant experts or land managers, in this case a member of the Edgerton Conservancy Board. This is one of two P4P projects of GCNH.
