American Elms in New Haven: On its Green and in its Neighborhoods
- - - A Garden Club of New Haven Project
In celebration of the centennial of the Garden Club of America in 2013, the Garden Club of New Haven partnered with the Committee of the Proprietors of the Green to educate visitors and residents on the history of the New Haven Green and the importance of the elm to our city. We want to renew our claim to the title of "The Elm City." This initiative is a natural extension of the work that the Club has done on the Green since the 1950's.
The project has three components: a Documentary Film, Walking Tours of the New Haven Green, and Renewing the Elms in the Elm City. For this over 100 Elm trees were planted in the New Haven area.
Our efforts secured the GCA Founders' Fund Award to continue to find homes for our elm trees. We continue to take a very active role in informing other garden clubs and citizen groups about the threat to street trees in Connecticut from the utility companies by making information available on our web site. The Garden History & Design committee worked with local charity Leeway to establish for them a Founder's Garden and to begin landscape planning for their entire campus. Common Ground received the Bartels Fund Award and Connecticut Forest and Park Association received the F1orence Bradley Award.
This interactive map allows you to see where each tree is planted with co-ordinates, pictures, and other information. Click on the open brackets, top right, and access individual trees by clicking on the down arrow in the left panel that appears.

To learn more about the history of elms in New Haven and the Club's involvement, go to New Haven's Green and its Elms. To this day, a primary focus of the Club's work continues to be planting new trees on the Green, in other city parks, and on New Haven streets, and providing assistance for the care of these trees.
